General Information
If you are interested in playing pennant, please contact the responsible person named below.
Men’s and women’s pennant enjoys a rich history within Victorian golf, with both competitions dating back over 100 years. Today, in all divisions of men’s pennant, each club is represented by a seven man team, whilst the women’s team and junior teams are represented by seven (Div. 1) and five players for all other teams.
Within all pennant levels, the competing clubs are divided into divisions with a promotion/relegation system in operation to determine their composition for the following season.
The men’s pennant season runs for eight weeks with “round robin” match play contests between clubs at one venue in each division every week. This year however, the men’s Division 1 team are trialing a new ‘home and away’ format. At the conclusion of the contests, the two leading teams in each division compete in finals to decide the divisional flags.
The women’s season is played over seven weeks, with the winning team in Divisions 2 onwards determined by points allocated for wins during the playing season. Division 1 will be decided when the top two teams play off in a final at the end of the season. Today, as has always been the way, both men and women’s pennant matches are fiercely contested, with all players representing their club with passion and pride. If you’re interested in playing pennant or assisting, please contact your Captains, Jenny Carden or Kirsty Hutton.

When reports are received from players in the prior week’s matches they will be published here.
Women’s Division 3 – R2. Played 27 March: Division 3 played Portarlington at Torquay in very trying conditions. We lost 4/1, Sally Carroll had a good win and everyone did their best. Jen Champion.
Women’s Sunday Pennant R3
by Deb Fowler – stand in Captain for Amanda Derham.

Sunday Pennant – At the start.
Played at 13th Beach, the Barwon Heads team—Jo Carden, Deb Fowler, Sarah Roe, Jane Mann, and Claudia Campbell—headed into the match with high hopes for a win. Facing opponents from Anglesea, there was a collective intake of breath when it became clear we would need to give them 51 shots.
The team put in a strong effort across all matches. Jo, Deb, and Jane completed their rounds on the 18th, with mixed outcomes—Jo finishing 1-up, while Jane and Deb came up short.
Claudia, supported by the indefatigable Micki on the bag, delivered one of the standout performances of the day. The mother-daughter duo worked brilliantly together, with Claudia finishing decisively on the 16th, 4-up. Sarah also had a solid round, but sadly beaten on the 17th.
Overall, it was a close and competitive match. With a week off ahead, the team will no doubt be fine-tuning those clutch putts in preparation for the next challenge.

Sunday Pennant – At the finish
Men’s Division 1 – R3
By Cam Russell
The Barwon Heads Division 1 side produced a strong all-round performance at home to defeat Lonsdale 5.5/2.5, securing an impressive team result built on composure and timely execution across the board.
At the top of the order, Tom Hyland and Ty Lawson set the tone early with commanding wins at numbers 1 and 2, both in control of their matches from the outset. Mark Cashinella continued the momentum at number 3, grinding out a hard-fought 1 up victory in a tightly contested match.
Cam Russell battled throughout but went down 2&1, while Craig Corker delivered a crucial result with a solid 3&2 win, reinforcing the side’s advantage. Peter Brooks fought hard with no luck to go down in a narrow contest.
Calem Hoffmann and Riley Siketa showed great composure under pressure with a birdie on the 18th to secure a halve in the best ball match and add valuable points to the team tally.
Overall, it was a well-rounded performance, with the side capitalising on key moments to secure a convincing victory.
Men’s Division 2 – R3
By Jake Ward
For the third week in succession, the Division Two players were spoiled with perfect weather as they made the trip out to Swan Island to take on Barwon Valley at Queenscliff. With barely a breath of wind to speak of and the course in great condition, it was a fantastic opportunity to get the first win on the board after narrow 4/3 defeats in the first two rounds.
Following a couple of late withdrawals due to illness and flight cancellations, the depth of the squad was tested. Thankfully, Matt Carroll and Joe Raimondo were able to step in as late replacements, with Matt making his pennant debut for the club.
Starting out at number 7, John Brodie was looking to regain his Round 1 form after a tough loss in Round 2. Unfortunately for Brodes, he came up against another very strong No. 7 player, who managed to get in front early and hold on for the win.
Joe Raimondo was next off at number 6, and despite Joey saying he wasn’t at his best, he was able to claim the side’s first half-point with a gritty halved match. At number 5 came Matt Carroll, excited to be playing his first pennant match for Barwon Heads and, apparently, his first SWGA pennant match in 25 years. Matt showed great fight to take his match all the way to the 17th but unfortunately just came up short, going down 2 & 1.
At number 4 was Brodie Young, returning to the side after missing Round 2. Brodie got in front early and was able to close it out on the 17th, taking a 2 & 1 victory and giving BH its first win of the day. Following Brodie was Tom Gross, who birdied the short par-4 1st and never looked back, recording a strong 4 & 2 win to level the match at 2.5 points apiece.
Going off at number 2 was Jake Ward, who was able to slowly edge his way in front at the turn. Following an up-and-down par from the greenside bunker on the 10th, Jake went 2 up, which was reduced to 1 up when his opponent birdied the par-5 12th. From there, the match turned into an arm wrestle, with each of the 13th to the 17th holes halved. A strong par on the 18th handed Jake a 2-up victory and secured at least a half-point for BH as all eyes turned to see how the No. 1 matches were unfolding.
Stepping up to number 1 this week was Paul Klein, taking on the big-hitting Tommi Wesley from Barwon Valley. After a strong start, Kleiny was 1 up through six holes. His opponent then went on a birdie blitz, with four birdies in the next six holes to take the lead. Standing on the 17th green 2 down with two to play, a solid two-putt par from Kleiny kept the match alive heading to the 18th. Unfortunately, Tommi hit a fantastic second shot to 10 feet on the final hole and holed out to win 1 up, halving the overall match 3.5–3.5.
Overall, there was a positive feeling among the players to claim a half-point after selection difficulties, with multiple players unavailable even before the late withdrawals. It is yet another sign of the great depth the club has that we can remain competitive in Division Two as the only club fielding a second team in the division. Following an Easter bye, BH hosts Division Two on Sunday 12 April, meaning our next match is three weeks away against Torquay at Barwon Valley—a must-win match in the context of our season.
