As we all know, Barwon Heads is windy! So, when the conditions change and adapt, you need to change and adapt with them! Hitting the same club that you would hit from 150 metres on a calm day is no good, if you have a 30km/h wind blowing. So how can you make sure that your shots go the correct distance in the wind?
Firstly, change club. If the wind is blowing into your face, choose the next club (or two!) up. This will help the ball go further straight away. If the wind is behind you and the ball is likely to go further, choose a club (or two) less than you would normally.
Secondly, change the ball position. If you are playing into the wind, choosing the next club up will already give you a good starting point as there will be less loft on the club naturally.
However, you might still need to lower the ball flight further. Do this by placing the ball slightly further back in your stance. The further back in the stance you go, the lower the ball will go. You should try to keep the hands and shaft leaning forward while doing this to aid strike and reduce loft.
When hitting this shot, I like to feel that my glove hand has reached my lead leg by the time that the clubhead reaches the golf ball, as I find this helps with shaft lean.
If the wind is behind you and you need to hit the ball higher to stop the ball quicker, position the golf ball one golf ball width further up in your stance, towards your front foot. Also, by this stage, you will have chosen a club with more loft than your usual club for the distance, so the ball will naturally go higher.
There is no need to try and swing faster with these shots, particularly the lower shot as this just adds backspin which will make the ball go higher and harder to control.
The third and most important part of this month's tip (and any golf tips from us that you try) is to practice! It can be tricky to learn a new skill, so take time and practice the shot on the driving range.
I look forward to seeing everybody hitting some Min Woo Lee inspired golf shots in the future!
