Dear member,

OFFICIAL REOPENING COCKTAIL PARTY

It was a night to remember as the Clubhouse once again came alive on Saturday evening as more than 300 members and guests gathered to celebrate its official reopening following the once-in-a-generation restoration project. A speech befitting the evening was made by Golf Australia CEO, James Sutherland.

50+ LUNCH INDUCTEES

Congratulations to the inductees into the 50+ 'club'.

Members honoured this year included those who were unable to be formally recognised in 2024 as no lunch was held during the Clubhouse renovation. Pictured above left to right with their 50+ year noted are Richard Allen (July 2025) Christina Hughes-Onslow*, Kirsty Hutton (July 2024), Angus McKechnie (July 2025), Frank Webb (July 2024), Robina Brookes (July 2025), Charlie Happell (July 2025), Andrew de Crespigny (July 2025) & Peter Hay*. Absent were Susie Sutherland (July 2024) and Bill Hayward (July 2024).

* Reached 50+ a few years ago but had not received badge.

NEW ARTWORK MARKS HISTORIC MOMENT

A limited-edition print by designer and digital artist Dan Toomey (framed in original hardwood reclaimed from the Clubhouse during its restoration) was unveiled by Life Member, Dawn Macdonald, and Golf Australia CEO James Sutherland at the Official Clubhouse Reopening Party on Saturday 1 November. Caught in a Trap

From the legends of sheep-sheltered dunes to the fine art of bunker maintenance, discover the story behind golf’s most loved (and loathed) hazard — and hear how The Barwon Heads Golf Club keeps its bunkers true to their natural links origins. Plus, enjoy a few words from Bec Bain on the deceptively simple 4th hole, where placement, not power, is the key to success.

MELBOURNE CUP

Congratulations to all who played today and to the winners (who included 'Best Dressed' Lyn Simms, pictured above with former President Andrew Simms). The story of the day, however, was Hamish Anderson's hole-in-one on the 4th...

Look out for the best hats at Oaks Day in the Clubhouse on Thursday.

RULE OF THE MONTH

By the Golf Shop staff

Sarah, Jane and Ruby are having a great day on the course during a warm afternoon.

They tee off on the 11th hole. Sarah hooks her tee shot into the trees on the left. When they find Sarah’s ball, to their surprise and shock, it’s sitting next to a curled-up copperhead snake.

What is the ruling and course of action for this?

Answer below.

BIRD OF THE MONTH

By Robin Spry

While it is not a bird that has been seen on the course, it was satisfying to see that the tawny frogmouth was recently named Australia’s 2025 bird of the year, after taking second place in the biennial Guardian/BirdLife Australia poll three times running.

Perhaps this month's feature bird will be a contender in the next poll.

FEATURE FLORA

By Bill McKellar

This month’s feature flora belongs to one of the largest and most diverse plant families in the world — yet it can be surprisingly elusive on the course.

LEARMONTH ROOM DRESS CODE

To encourage members and guests to continue to make use of the Learmonth Room when passing by the Clubhouse, we will be trialling a slightly more relaxed dress standard in this space.

During the trial period, modest and discreet active wear (including walking and cycling attire) with appropriate closed footwear will be accepted in the Learmonth Room and the adjacent locker rooms. Beach attire is not permitted.

While on the subject of the dress code, members are reminded that blue denim jeans are not permitted anywhere in the Clubhouse.

WellWays Charity Day

On Monday 20 October, The Barwon Heads Golf Club hosted its annual charity day in support of Wellways Geelong.

REGISTER YOUR GUESTS

To comply with liquor licensing regulations, guests must sign in each time they visit the Club. A registration book is available at Reception.

If your guest is playing golf with you, there is no need to sign the registration book, as the timesheet already serves as the official record of their visit.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

A reminder that the AGM will be held on Saturday 15 November 2025.

RULES Answer

Answer

Rule 16-2b

Relief for Dangerous Animal Condition

When there is interference by a dangerous animal condition:

(1) When Ball Is Anywhere Except Penalty Area. The player may take relief under Rule 16.1b, c or d, depending on whether the ball is in the general area, in a bunker or on the putting green.

(2) When Ball Is in Penalty Area. The player may take free relief or penalty relief:

Free Relief: Playing from Inside Penalty Area. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b, except that the nearest point of complete relief and the relief area must be in the penalty area.

Penalty Relief: Playing from Outside Penalty Area.

  • The player may take penalty relief under Rule 17.1d.
  • If there is interference by a dangerous animal condition where the ball would be played after taking this penalty relief outside the penalty area, the player may take further relief under (1) without additional penalty.

(3) No Free Relief When Clearly Unreasonable. There is no free relief under Rule 16.2b:

  • When playing the ball as it lies is clearly unreasonable because of something from which the player is not allowed to take free relief (such as when a player is unable to make a stroke because of where the ball lies in a bush).
  • When interference exists only because a player chooses a club, type of stance or swing or direction of play that is clearly unreasonable under the circumstances.

For purposes of this Rule, the nearest point of complete relief means the nearest point (not nearer the hole) where the dangerous animal condition does not exist. Penalty for Playing Ball from a Wrong Place in Breach of Rule 16.2: General Penalty under Rule 14.7a.
