CLUBHOUSE REOPENING CALENDAR in Development

Reopening in Sight – The Clubhouse Returns from early-September.

The restoration of our much-loved Clubhouse is nearly complete, with a carefully staged return set to begin in early September.

Subject to occupancy and other statutory permits being granted, the Clubhouse is expected to reopen during the first week of September with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and morning tea, followed by a gradual resumption of services and a spring program of celebratory events.

The full calendar will be shared via a special eNews to members within the next fortnight. Whether you're looking forward to a quiet lunch, a guided tour or an evening of cocktails and live music, the calendar will offer something for every member.

We look forward to welcoming you back.

Farewell to the Golfers' Marquee

Temporary Closures Ahead of Clubhouse Reopening.

In preparation for the Clubhouse reopening, the Golfers' Marquee will be farewelled in late August.

A short period of closure will follow as staff transition back into the restored Clubhouse.

Key dates:

Friday 22 August – Farewell to the Golfers’ Marquee (5:00pm–6:30pm. A bookings timesheet will be available once the reopening calendar is released.)

Sunday 24 August – Marquee closes (6:00pm)

Week commencing Monday 25 August - In the absence of the marquee there will be no after-golf hospitality during the pack-down, transition and preparation to reopen phase. The morning coffee caravan will remain in operation and the cart will continue its normal schedule on Wednesday and Saturday.

We thank members for their understanding during this brief interruption to service.

Marrum Cup 100th Anniversary

First contested in 1925, the Marrum Cup is one of Victoria’s most historic women’s amateur team events. This September, its centenary will be celebrated over four days in the newly reopened Clubhouse.

Entry invitations have been emailed to clubs today, and we look forward to welcoming players to Barwon Heads for this milestone edition.

Members are encouraged to take part—whether by playing in the Monday and Wednesday events and/or by attending the Tuesday evening dinner and Wednesday cocktail party and fashion parade.

Foursomes Championships 2025

Good luck to members who have entered the qualifying rounds of this year's Club Foursomes Championship. Single qualifying rounds will be played on Tuesday 5 August and Sunday 10 August.

PRESIDENTS VS CAPTAINS TEAMS MATCH

Originally scheduled for 2 September, the President vs Captain Teams Match will now be held on Tuesday 9 September 2025. Please update your diary and save the date.

This will mark the return of the women’s shotgun start format (with lunch to follow), the first since the Clubhouse closed for renovations – a welcome return to this sociable format. Further details will be shared when the reopening calendar is published.

CLUBHOUSE MOVE IN - TEMPORARY CAR PARK CLOSURE

To facilitate the return of furniture and hospitality supplies to the Clubhouse, a series of delivery and removalist trucks will require access to the upper car park.

Subject to project completion, the upper car park will be closed for four days from 19 to 22 August (inclusive) to accommodate these activities.

Captain's corner

Ever wondered how slope ratings actually affect your handicap?

In this Captain’s Corner, Jenny Carden explains how course ratings are calculated, why your handicap changes from one course to another, and what it all means for your game at Barwon Heads.

Also, Club Champion, David Clark shares why the deceptively open second hole at Barwon Heads is his personal favourite. More than a par 3, it’s an early test of nerve, strategy and execution—and one that sets the tone for the rest of the round.

Fire Brigade Appreciation WEEK

Thank you to all members who donated during the fire brigade appreciation week in early July. Approximately $1300 was raised.

RULE OF THE MONTH

By the golf shop staff

Bill, Graham, Phillip and Stuart were playing a challenging round in windy conditions. They had just completed the 17th hole when the siren sounded, suspending play due to the course being deemed unplayable—balls were blowing off greens across the course.

What should the players do next?

Note: This is a suspension of play due to a non-dangerous situation, such as balls blowing off greens or greens being under water. This differs from an immediate suspension in a dangerous situation, such as lightning or dense fog.

Answer below.

BIRD OF THE MONTH

By Robin Spry

Widespread across the region and often seen perched near the dunes or on fenceposts, this adaptable raptor is a regular – if quiet – presence at the edge of the course.

A NATIVE FAVOURITE WITH A FRAGRANT SURPRISE

By Bill McKellar

Planted near the 7th fairway, this spiny yet elegant small tree puts on a quiet show from spring through summer – and plays an important role in the local ecosystem.

RULES Answer

Answer

Under Rule 5.7b of the Rules of Golf, players must follow these procedures:

  • If between holes:
As the group had just completed the 17th, they must not begin the 18th. Play must be paused until the suspension is lifted.

  • If during a hole:
If any player in the group had already started playing the hole when the siren sounded, each player may choose to either:

    • Stop play immediately and mark their ball, or

    • Continue and complete the hole.

Once the Committee (or Golf Shop staff) advises that play may resume, players must restart from the exact position where they stopped. Players must be ready to play.
