Dear member,

This eNews is the monthly 'Member Update' which keeps members informed of general Club news.

If you are not already logged in to the member area of the website, please log in now so the links in this newsletter open automatically.

Committee NEWS

The Committee met on Wednesday 28 February and I would like to inform you of the following decisions that were made:

  • The 2024-2025 House Levy.
  • The membership of the Project Steering Group for the construction period of the Clubhouse renovation.
  • Changes to the Club By-Law concerning cart use.
  • Changes to the Heat Policy.

Continue reading this monthly Member Update for more information about these decisions.

I would also like to mention that if you haven't read the Weekly Updates on the website, an important milestone was reached during February with the Club formally signing the building contract with Alchemy Construct. This sets the Clubhouse renovation truly in motion and already members can see Alchemy staff setting up their permanent worksite in the western car park.

cLUB cHAMPIONSHIPS - qUALIFIERS

The two weekday qualifying rounds were played on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 February and the weekend rounds will be played tomorrow and Sunday. Good luck to all.

Keep an eye on the website next week to find out who has qualified for the quarterfinals, which will be played next Saturday.

Club Championships - Presentations

Members and their guests are encouraged to join the gallery to watch some of the Club's best golfers play the finals on Monday 11 March. A combined presentation of the major prizes for women and men will take place in the Clubhouse afterwards.

House Levy

The full house levy for the 2024-2025 levy year (May 2024-April 2025) has been set by the Committee at its February meeting and will remain unchanged at $420.

This charge will appear on your March statement (emailed in early April), due and payable in full by 30 April 2024. The levy will become active and usable from the 1st of May 2024. For those members on direct debit, this payment will be debited on Tuesday 30 April 2024.

Please note: As has been previously advised, the Committee proposes that members have a two-year period over which to spend the 2024-2025 levy, given the closure of the Clubhouse in June 2024 for approximately 12 months and the smaller-scale menu that will be on offer at the Temporary Clubhouse. This proposal will require a change to the Rules, which currently do not allow this type of flexibility. The Committee will consult with the Rules Sub-Committee on the Rule change and then seek member approval for it at the Annual General Meeting in November.

A reminder that your 2023-2024 (current) levy expires on Tuesday 30 April 2024 and unused amounts will be forfeited.

Direct Debit BY Credit Card

Members who choose to pay their annual subscriptions, house levy and/or monthly statements by direct debit will soon be able to pay using their credit cards (Visa or Mastercard).

An email will be sent to all members in March with more information.

Project Steering Group

At its most recent meeting the Committee approved the membership of the Project Steering Group (PSG) for the construction period of the Clubhouse renovation.

The role of the PSG is to provide rigorous oversight, strategic tactical direction and leadership for the project on behalf of the Committee, to which it reports regularly. Each PSG member has specific expertise to contribute.  From March the PSG will be chaired by Committee member Paul Klein, who has extensive experience in building/construction. The three other PSG members will be: Club Treasurer, Bronwyn Constance (finance), Vice-President Peter Guy (legal) and Committee member James Poole (engineering/project management).

Rules

The club championships throw up many interesting scenarios for our members, some of which we get queried about in the golf shop. A common one, mainly among higher handicappers, is 'Can I get a drop out of a bunker?' What is the answer and what would be the penalty if the drop was allowable?

Steve Keipert revisits the 13th on Wednesday

The 13th

Exactly thirteen years ago, in the March 2011 edition, Australian Golf Digest rated the country's best golf holes to make up their Hall of Fame for Australia's golf holes. The 13th hole at Barwon Heads was included.

"Great golf holes are the bedrock of great golf courses," Australian Golf Digest editor Steve Keipert said. "...a single brilliant hole can elevate the entire golf experience."

Darius Oliver, Architecture Editor at Planet Golf reported at the time: "Like the Postage Stamp at Royal Troon, the genius of the 13th at Barwon Heads is that a pure shot invariably finds the green, while even a slight miss will kick off the edge and bound away into a dangerous area. This hole is one of the greatest advertisements in Australia for short grass as a legitimate greenside hazard."

Rules Answer

Rule 19.3b Extra Relief Option (Two Penalty Strokes)

As an extra relief option when a player's ball is in a bunker, for a total of two penalty strokes, the player may take back-on-the-line relief outside the bunker under Rule 19.2b.

So, relief is at hand if you are struggling with your bunker shots (but don't forget that two stroke penalty!)
