Tuesday 18 December 2018

Dear Aces, Junior Members and Junior Golf Week Participants,

aces finish another year

Sunday the 2nd of December was the final Aces Sunday for the year and we finished the year in style with eight new Aces red caps being presented (pictured below). This brings our red cap count to 105.

Changing the format to once a month in 2018 has been very successful with numbers steadily growing through the year to over 20 regular attendees each session. Remember your red cap gets you free Par-3 access so on those cool or windy summer days head to your golf club and take some friends with you.

A big thank you once again to our Professionals for their continued support and in particular Marcus for making Aces Sundays such fun.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Sunday 3rd February 2019.

watch the final day live!

The Junior Vic Open is currently being played at The Barwon Heads Golf Club (17th-21st December) with 178 juniors from around the country (and some from overseas) playing for the title. On the first day's play Harrison Burner from Glenelg (SA) equalled the men's course record set by Heath D'Altera in 2005 - what a great effort! More information about the event and live scores can be viewed here.

Good luck to BHGC juniors completing in the event:

  • Tom Thiele
  • Angus O'Brien
  • Jack Keating
  • Stirling Shier

Play on the final day (to be held at The Barwon Heads Golf Club) will be streamed live on the golf.org.au website and via Facebook Live. Even better, come up to the Club and spectate; the best place will be on the 6th green, over the road from the Clubhouse. (The course has been re-routed for the event with the 6th hole becoming the 18th.)

Jack Keating Stars in Junior Pennant Finals

Playing for Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Jack starred in the Melbourne Junior Pennant finals winning his semi-final 6/4 and his final 8/6. Despite this fine effort by Jack, RMGC lost to Box Hill Golf Club in a playoff. Next year our SWGA Junior Pennant season will form a region of the Golf Victoria junior pennant competition with our SWGA champions playing in the state finals which will be exciting.

State PRIMARY SCHOOLS FINAL

Campbell Shier (pictured) was our only state final representative this year which was played on Wednesday 5th December at Kooringal Golf Club. Let's hope our resurgent Aces can swell our numbers next year.

Sprague Final

For the second year in a row a junior made the final of the prestigious Sprague Cup which was first played in 1946. However, the result was the same as last year with Donovan and Hague Shier losing to Peter Johnston and Darrel Radcliffe on the 18th hole in a close match. Congratulations and well done to Peter and Darrel, in particular Peter who avenged his Centenary Medal loss to Donovan earlier in the year.

Junior Golf Week

What began as the Wallace Cup, a single event held in 1928 designed to motivate juniors to practice seriously, has gathered momentum (and trophies) to become Junior Golf Week. Now in its 91st year, there are sixteen named events in this week dedicated to juniors to showcase their passion for the game.

Events range from age-based (under 8; 9-10; 11-13; 14-17yrs) to mixed foursomes, father/son; mother/daughter etc. Some are played on the Par-3 course and others on the main course.

Unfortunately, not all recipients of this email are eligible to enter the events comprising the Junior Golf Week. Only Members, Junior Members (and their guests) can attend the opening week BBQ; and only Junior Members or children and grandchildren of current Members can participate in the competitions. But if you would like to attend/compete in 2020 and have an interest in Junior Membership at the Club, please email Roseanne Conheady.

Participants in the Junior Golf Week should book early for the opening BBQ to be held on Monday 14th January from 5.00pm on the Clubhouse deck. Some fantastic entertainment has been organised.

Members can read more and book for all events through the Member area of the website. See this Member post for more information.

Junior Golf Week Opening BBQ - January 2018.

"The terrible thing about a missed shot in golf is that the thing is done, irrevocably, irretrievable. Perhaps that is why golf is a great game, it is so much like the game of life. We don't have the shots over in either."

OB Keeler, Atlanta Sportswriter

Merry Christmas and I will see you on the golf course soon.
