A GUIDE TO YOUR 'NEW' CLUBHOUSE

In the first five days after reopening, more than 300 members will take part in guided tours and receive information firsthand. For those unable to attend, a short guide will be published on the website soon after reopening to help you make the most of your experience. Once open, we encourage you to explore, dine and gather, stay overnight, celebrate with others and enjoy the Clubhouse in your own way.

FROM Caravan to CLUBHOUSE: COFFEE FINDS A NEW HOME IN the LEARMONTH ROOM

The final coffees and snacks were served from the caravan this morning, and the van itself has been sold.

Don't despair!

The Learmonth Room will now be your pre-round place to gather, enjoy a coffee and snack, and stock up on refreshments for your round. While there will be a takeaway ‘coffee window’, there’s no need to wait outside in the wind—come in, mingle, relax, read the newspapers or contemplate your golf strategy.

Learmonth Room Operating Hours:

Tuesday 2 September: After the official Clubhouse reopening ceremony (from 10:00am) until midday.

Wednesday 3 September onwards: From the first competition time until midday.

After midday, hospitality services will finish and (subject to any Club event taking place) members are welcome to use the room as they please.

REGISTER YOUR GUESTS

To comply with liquor licensing regulations, all guests must sign in each time they visit the Club. Registration books are available at Reception.

If your guest is playing golf with you, there is no need to sign the registration book, as the timesheet already serves as the official record of their visit.

Marrum Cup 100th Anniversary

First contested in 1925, the Marrum Cup is one of Victoria’s most historic women’s amateur team events. This September, its centenary will be celebrated over four days at the newly reopened Clubhouse.

Entry invitations have been emailed to clubs, and we look forward to welcoming players to Barwon Heads for this milestone edition.

Members are encouraged to take part—whether by playing in the Monday and Wednesday events and/or by attending the Tuesday evening dinner (nearing capacity) and Wednesday cocktail party and fashion parade.

Click the link below for event details, entry forms and booking information.

MARRUM CUP VOLUNTEERS

Volunteer spotters are required during the Bramerton Cup on Tuesday 23 and Thursday 25 September. Please self-register with location hole, position and time via the online timesheet links below.

PRESIDENTS VS CAPTAINS TEAMS MATCH

The President vs Captain Teams Match will be held on Tuesday 9 September 2025. The draw will be available on the afternoon the day prior. Half of the players will represent the President and will be asked to wear blue and the other half the Captain in red.

This will mark the return of the women’s shotgun start format (with lunch to follow), the first since the Clubhouse closed for renovations – a welcome return to this sociable format.

Registrations close Monday 8 September at 9.00am.

This Sunday 7 September

The lunch menu on Father's Day will be supplemented with a Sunday roast special-of-the-day. Call the Club on 03 5255 6255 to reserve a table for the family. Lunch will be served from midday.

RULE OF THE MONTH

By the Golf Shop staff

Gary and Phillip are enjoying a fine day of golf, with only the 18th hole left to play. They pause on the tee to agree that the closing hole at Barwon Heads has become more challenging since the driving range was reclassified from a “No Play Penalty Area” to “Out of Bounds”.

Gary then hits a high hook which looks like it is heading into the driving range area, but neither he nor Phillip is certain whether the ball has stayed in play.

How should Gary proceed, and what is the ruling if the ball is out of bounds?

Answer below.

BIRD OF THE MONTH

By Robin Spry

The magpie was voted Australia’s favourite bird in 2017. Iconic, intelligent and arguably the country’s most polarising bird.

FEATURE FLORA

By Bill McKellar

This month’s Feature Flora introduces the bright and resilient Common Everlasting – a golden native daisy soon to be seen in the Clubhouse gardens. Click through to discover its story and why it’s such a fitting addition to our landscape.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...

WEEKLY UPDATE

The Clubhouse renovation weekly update has been the most widely read news item on the member website. The final update was posted last Wednesday 27 August. Thank you for reading!

RULES Answer

Answer

If there is doubt about whether the ball is out of bounds, Gary should play a provisional ball before leaving the tee. This avoids the possibility of having to walk back to replay the shot, and it helps maintain pace of play.

If Gary’s original ball is confirmed to be out of bounds, he must continue with the provisional ball. If he chose not to play a provisional ball, he would be required to return to the tee and play his third shot from there.

Rule 18.2b – If a ball is lost or out of bounds, the player must take stroke-and-distance relief by adding one penalty stroke and playing the original ball, or another ball, from the spot of the previous stroke.

New TEMPORARY LOCAL RULE

18th Fairway – left-hand side joining driving range is out of bounds (Rule 18.2b)

This area is defined by timber posts with black caps. If a ball is out of bounds, the player must take stroke-and-distance relief by adding one penalty stroke and playing another ball from where the previous stroke was made (see Rule 14.6). Players may not enter the driving range area to collect their ball.
