tip of the monthBy Mark Delaney Coming into summer the course conditions will get firmer and
faster with the combination of wind and heat, so the following tip on the bump
and run shot will help you when around the greens as a good choice as it is a simple low risk shot to
save you shots. Chip like you are putting, the lower the flight, the less
that can go wrong. Putt if you can, bump it if you can’t, lob it only if
there’s no choice. Follow the technique below: Stance: Narrow, feet close together (one clubhead apart)
slightly open stance. Weight: 60% on your lead side (left) foot for right
hand golfer Ball position: More towards your right foot which will give
you a slight forward shaft lean Grip down towards the bottom of the grip and raise the
handle higher (more upright) this allows you to get closer to the ball, the
feel is very similar to putting. Swing is pendulum back and through similar to putting stroke
with minimal wrist action, keeping your grip pressure very light, (3 out of
10). Keep your weight fixed on your left side throughout the shot
and keep your nose slightly in front of the ball, this will ensure you make
contact with the ball first. This shot can be played with the club of your choice
including hybrids, and mid irons say 6, 7 or 8. This shot is designed to get the
ball up in the air for a short distance and the have it roll like a putt! Using less loft will minimise the risk and make it easier to
get close to the hole especially on our firmer ground conditions. Practice this shot with different irons to get a feel for
how much roll each club produces. |
