The winning entry.

putter winner

In celebration of our 'new' golf shop's first birthday, we marked the occasion by running an exciting competition where members had the chance to win a top-of-the-line TaylorMade putter.

For every $100 spent in the golf shop on retail goods and merchandise, members received an entry to win. There was no limit to the number of entries you could make; members who made several or high value purchases had the most entries. The prize was drawn at the Melbourne Cup Day luncheon in the Clubhouse by President Andrew de Crespigny.

The winner was James Kelleway, who unlike most on Melbourne Cup Day, had the odds in his favour - he'd bought a new set of clubs! Coincidentally, when shopping for his new clubs James hadn't decided on a putter.

Now he has one.

Congratulations James and a big thank you to all members who had entered the competition.

Setup Position to Hit it Low.

Finish Position to Hit it Low.

tip from the pro

By Mark Delaney

Finish Low, Hit it Low

It is challenging playing golf at Barwon Heads - or anywhere else on the coast - as the windy conditions can affect the flight and distance of the golf ball; however, with a couple of small adjustments in your setup you will be able to better manage your game.

For LOWER shots into the wind, always finish LOW with your follow through.

  • Grip the club one or two inches down from the top of grip.
  • Position the ball further back towards your right foot (for right-handers); let's say... two inches back from your normal ball position.
  • Distribute your weight at setup 60 percent on your left side.
  • Use a 3/4 backswing and finish LOW on the follow through.
  • It's very important to swing a little softer... say at only 80 percent to take the backspin off the ball. The harder you swing the more spin you create which will cause the ball to balloon up and you will lose distance.
  • Lastly, depending on the strength of the wind, you may need to adjust your club selection accordingly as it can be as much as between one to four or even five clubs difference.
