Wednesday 1 July 2020

Dear member,

This eNews is the monthly 'Member Update' which keeps members informed of general Club news.

If you're not already logged in to the member area of the website, please log in now so the links in this newsletter open automatically.

Busy times

At the time of writing, 4072 member rounds were played in June, 1834 more than were played in June last year.

Once again, thank you for your patience and understanding over this busy period on the course and restrictive period in the Clubhouse and Pro Shop. It has been nice to see well-distanced members return to the Clubhouse after golf. Please continue to be vigilant and if you’re feeling unwell – stay at home.

Prize Allocations

Members may have noticed changes to the competition prize structure since returning from the COVID-19 course closure. Since Wednesday 13th May each competition field now receives...

Caddie Magazine Video

A great supporter of the Club, Will Watt, editor-in-chief of Caddie Magazine took to the skies recently to capture this video. In his words, " Dreamy views above the classic links of The Barwon Heads Golf Club. The heritage clubhouse and traditional feel of Barwon Heads is paired with world class golf, a beautiful coastline popular with surfers year-round and a small town feel that is the pick of the peninsula."

A Stitch in CoVID Time...

We came across this delightful story on Facebook about "some lovely ladies of Barwon Heads who volunteered their time during recent coronavirus lockdowns..." Several members make an appearance: well done to all.

NB. The external link to watch the video is via The House of Wellness' Facebook page.

Men's Foursomes Championships

Entries for these prestigious events open on Saturday 4th July 2020.

There are both the scratch (G.C Adams Scratch Trophy) and nett (H.F. Tucker Handicap Trophy) events available to all pairs.

Fire Brigade Appreciation Day

Continue your support for the CFA by playing in the Club's annual Fire Brigade Appreciation Days held on Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th July.

Members will be charged a $10 competition fee, with $5 per player being donated to the Barwon Heads CFA. In addition, a donation box will be placed in the bar area throughout the week for any extra donations you may like to contribute. Red fire hats will be placed on the 1st tee as a reminder of the event.

The Barwon Heads CFA's station recently underwent a half-million-dollar upgrade partially funded by community fundraising. Read more about it via link below.

Course

Thank you to all the members doing their part to care for the course. The response to Adam Lamb's video about how to repair divots on the course has been wonderful.

  1. Chop
  2. Sand
  3. Smooth

Adopt a sand bucket and continue the good work on the Par-3 course also.

Captain's Corner

Interclub events

The Club hosts and visits many other clubs during the year. The format of these events is usually some form of matchplay, either men, women or mixed and they are an excellent way to meet fellow members and those of other clubs. They also offer the chance to play on some very fine courses other than our own.

Each year, the same names often reappear on the expression of interest list for these events, giving the impression they're for a select few. But that's not the case; while regular volunteers are appreciated, it would be great to see a broader cross-section of membership play in these events.

Certainly, a few spots on each team are reserved for those that need to be part of the team, however the remainder are selected by ballot if oversubscribed. So, next time notification appears on the website regarding an upcoming match against another club, be encouraged to put your name down as I'm sure you will enjoy the day.

Community Golf Day

The annual Community Golf Day with proceeds benefiting our neighbours at the Barwon Heads Primary School will be held on Sunday 2nd August. The event will run under a different format than usual due to COVID-19 regulations and guidelines.

The event's particulars are subject to change depending on government regulations.

Diary / Golf Programme

What's on? what's cancelled?

The Vincent Cup scheduled for Sunday 23rd August has been cancelled. As a result, the guest day will be a one tee start not an afternoon shotgun as printed in the diary. The Women's Invitational in the diary on the 17th and 18th August has also been cancelled.

Click the link below for a calendar of events to see whether they've been postponed, cancelled or will go ahead as planned.

More on cancellations...

Wouldn't it be nice if by late July we could sit back and enjoy a wine dinner in the Clubhouse and a few days later be entertained by Ian Cover et al at the Wednesday Golfers' Cup dinner? Unfortunately, with the way things are going at the time of writing both events have been postponed.

Women's Club Championships 2021

In a bid to increase participation in the Women's Club Championships next year, the Club has decided to trial having weekend and weekday qualifying rounds.

Women members will have the option of qualifying on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th February or choosing the weekday qualifying rounds on Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd March.

When entries open, there will be a weekend entry list and a weekday entry list.  Members will not be able to play one day over the weekend and one weekday. On completion of the qualifying rounds, the results will be merged with the top (eight) A, B & C Grade players progressing through to the finals. Finals will be held the following weekend 6th-8th March.

Note: If there are less than 18 players in a grade, qualifying numbers will reduce to four players. A countback will occur in all grades for the final qualifying position.

Hearty, classic dishes, warming winter vegetables; a takeaway evening meal is the answer.

Takeaway Meals

Takeaway meals are now available from the Clubhouse daily. However, you're encouraged to use the pre-order system to guarantee orders and to assist the kitchen. The cut-off is tomorrow, Thursday 2nd at 9.00am if you want to guarantee collection this Saturday 4th.

If you happen to be in the Clubhouse and want a takeaway meal at the last minute, please ask a staff member if there are any available. Phone enquiries are also welcome if you happen to miss an order cut-off time.

Ten-minute tee intervals

The Club has received very positive feedback regarding the 10-minute tee intervals. The increased enjoyment members are experiencing finishing rounds in under four hours can, in a significant part, be attributed to the increased tee intervals.

*UPDATE* A trial will be introduced on Wednesdays and Saturdays during July using nine-minute tee intervals.

Saturday nine-hole competitions

A trial period is currently underway for mixed gender nine-hole competitions on Saturdays...

Hole in one - at 87

Congratulations to Peter Nagle who aced the tricky 3rd hole of the Creek Course at Thirteenth Beach Golf Links on Saturday 13th June. Well done, Peter!

Captains vs Professionals

Teams of men and women competed in the annual match play event on Saturday 6th June.
