Dear Aces,

Junior Pennant - Round 4 & Photos

On Sunday we hosted Geelong 1 in our last home and away fixture for 2019 and came away with a 4/1 win which was harder fought than the score suggests.

At the halfway mark Donovan's match was the only one in which we were in front but as we have done all season, the team was very strong over the back nine. This enabled us to achieve another strong win and assures us victory in the Westerveld Shield and a place in the Ford Cup Final on the 24th November (against Lonsdale Golf Club) despite having a bye in the last round.

  1. Tom Thiele (above) - Tom started well winning the first (birdie) and the second holes however from that point, he was unable to capitalise on the holes which he did not have to give a shot on. His opponent played very steadily, and Tom eventually went down 6/4

  1. Stirling Shier (above) - Stirling continued his good form. After his opponent birdied the first, Stirling made the turn 1-down. From that point he was square with the card on the back nine with birdies on the 11th and 16th and closed out his match 3/2.

  1. Val Rodriguez (above) - Val after an up and down front nine was 2-down after nine. Val persevered impressively on the back nine exemplified by putting the disappointment of halving the 16th, when he was in complete control of the hole, to go on and win the 17th (great up and down from left hand bunker) and 18th (big drive, eight iron and two putts) to win his match 1up and give us the chance to host the final.

  1. Donovan Shier (above) - Donovan played very well and he was always in control of his match with his wedge play from under 100m a feature. He won his match 5/4.

  1. Bailey Macdonald (above) - Started well this week but his opponent got on top from the 5th as he struggled to find the fairway off the tee resulting in him being 3-down at the turn. However, Bailey played the back nine sensationally, as he has done all season, to be 7 shots under his handicap for the back nine claiming victory on the 16th 3/2.

My thanks this week go to:

  • our caddies Jason Thiele and Dawn Macdonald who once again were very important to our lower order
  • photographer Robbie Rodriguez whose pictures are included in this report
  • Captain Frank Webb, Men's Pennant Manager Gary O'Brien and John Brodie for supporting the boys on the course
  • Damien and his team in the clubhouse who provided a great lunch and hospitality post contest

A reflection of how much the Geelong GC team loved their whole Barwon Heads experience was that after their lunch they all played our Par 3 course with their parents - nobody wanted to go home!

Like us, our Ford Cup opponent, Lonsdale Golf Club, have won the Trevenen Shield with a round to play. How they perform in their last contest this Sunday will determine who hosts the Ford Cup Final on the 24th November. They too are undefeated in the Shield and will present a great challenge regardless of the course on which we play them in a fortnight.
