Captain Frank's Rules

Dear all,

After two years of supplying quizzes and conversations on the rules of golf (which I hope you've found useful) this is my last.

Earlier this year we witnessed the most widespread changes to the rules of golf in 30 years, providing me with plenty of topics to base my quizzes on. However, rather than a quiz to end my tenure as Captain, I thought I'd draw your attention to one of the weirdest rule controversies of 2019*. (I'd like to thank Hugh Brodie for drawing this to my attention.)

All the best for your future in golf.

Captain Frank Webb

*No matter how well the rules of golf are thought out, there is always one that challenges the R&A.

Pro receiving penalty for NOT taking a mulligan is the weirdest rules controversy of 2019.

During the final round of the SAS Championship, Jesper Parnevik missed a short bogey putt that horseshoed around the hole and ultimately hit his foot. From there, Parnevik tapped in what remained for his double.

Only to find out that he really carded a triple.

That's because Parnevik was entitled to replay the original bogey putt under Rule 11.1.b, Exception 2.

When Ball Played from Putting Green Accidentally Hits Any Person, Animal or Movable Obstruction (Including Another Ball in Motion) on Putting Green: The stroke does not count and the original ball or another ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated). However, because Parnevik failed to do so, he incurred a penalty.

The situation was so rare, according to rules official Brian Claar, that the USGA couldn't recall the incident happening in a professional tournament.

MOwING With Mo's

The course staff will be looking more hirsute again this month as they're participating in the great awareness campaign that is Movember. Keep an eye out around the golf course for their new moustaches and please take the time to donate and together we can make a difference.

There will be a BBQ held at the maintenance shed on Friday 29th November with awards for the best moustache. Members can attend if interested, during which time a shed tour can be included. RSVP your attendance by email to Course Superintendent Adam Lamb.
