eighty Years of Membership

You won't find their names in 'Heads, You Win', nor all that often on silverware or gold-painted honour boards, but two members deserve recognition for reaching a milestone that (according to our records) no other member has achieved. Click here to read more.

We wish everyone a very happy and safe Easter. We hope to see you on the course or in the Clubhouse over the (busy) Easter weekend.

Easter Events

Entries open as usual, 8 days prior at 3.00pm.

Saturday 20th April - Geoff Gubbins Memorial Trophy (Men)

Easter Sunday 21st April - Gatehouse Trophy (first played 1975) (Mixed Canadian foursomes)

Easter Monday 22nd April - T.E. Bostock Memorial Trophy (first played in 1963) and Graham Trophy (>65years first played in 1972) (Men), Thornthwaite Easter Bogey Cup (Women).

Member Sundays

Good news! As of the 5th May, Member Mondays will become Member Sundays.

The idea behind this initiative is to help all new and existing members who may not be quite comfortable with the understanding of playing etiquette, scoring, general course management (e.g. raking bunkers, etc.) and all other facets of the Club. We want all new and current members to enjoy their golf, meet other members, and gain the confidence to play in and enjoy regular weekly competitions and other events.

Click here to read more about the format for the afternoon and to see how you can benefit by attending.

Anzac day events

Anzac Day falls on Thursday 25th April and the always popular Downing Ambrose Trophy will be held on the day with a 1.00pm shotgun start. Entries open eight days prior.

The Anzac and Services Cups will be played the following Saturday 27th April.

Members who have served in any of the three services, including those who served as part of national service are eligible to play in The Services Cup (first donated by JC MacKinnon in 1935 for ex-servicemen). Play will be off the red tees and the field will tee off between 10.00-10.30am. Please call the Pro Shop to book. Please note that due to declining numbers, the traditional Anzac flag raising and bugle ceremony will not take place.

The Anzac Cup (donated by the Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads sub branch of the RSL) will be played off the blue tees. Book for the Anzac Cup as a normal Saturday competition. Members who are not ex-servicemen are eligible to win the Anzac Cup. Presentation of the Services Cup will take place in the bar at the conclusion of play while the Anzac Cup will be presented at a later date.

rules

Captain Frank's Rules Reminders

I'd like to clarify one of the new rules introduced in January this year. It concerns your relief options for a ball unplayable in a bunker.

When a player decides that his or her ball in a bunker is unplayable, the player has four options as per Rule 19.3 shown in the diagram below:

  1. For one penalty stroke, the player may take stroke-and-distance relief.
  2. For one penalty stroke, the player may take back-on-the-line relief in the bunker.
  3. For one penalty stroke, the player may take lateral relief in the bunker.
  4. For a total of two penalty strokes, the player may take back-on-the-line relief outside the bunker based on a reference line going straight back from the hole through the spot of the original ball.

A video I've found helpful regarding the new rules is titled the '20 Most Important Changes' and is introduced by International Rules Official Yves C. Ton-That. He explains the four options near the 4'26" mark of this video below.

Frank Webb, Captain.
