men's pennant

round tHree

By Gary Hill

A typical day at the Sands, the odd few showers with a combination of strong westerly winds made scoring tough, although on some down-wind holes driving-the-green was an off chance.

The Barwon Valley team is always a strong outfit and a good measure for us today, albeit a little weakened with one of their top order players, Simon Trickey, a late withdrawal. For us it was good to have Tony Light back in the team. He provides a nice balance in the mid-order - which was altered slightly this week with a view to getting 'some runs on the board' early on - a move that paid dividends.

Around the 5th hole we were travelling pretty well and this trend continued with the match evenly poised after ten.

Delighted again to have Club Captain, Frank Webb, join me for all the day's play then mid-round John Brodie was there to urge the team on also.

The dryness here an issue also

division one at The Sands

BHGC halved Barwon Valley 3.5/3.5

1. Mick Terrington W 5/3

2. Barry Tippett L 3/1

3. Billy Flinn L 2/1

4. Richard Allen Sq

5. Tony Light L 5/4

6. Nick Power W 4/3

7. Hague Shier W 3/2

Hague continued his good form today and looked really settled leading out our team making few if any mistakes to secure our first win - and back-to-back wins for himself.

At #6 Nick Power took advantage of how well he strikes the ball to put early pressure on his opponent and force some errors that resulted in his first win this season, our second today after 15 holes. My view: many more wins to come for Nick after this confidence boost.

A steely gaze over his putt

Back and keen as ever after a few weeks out of golf, Tony Light struck the ball well off the tee and was in touch for most of the day, a few 'non-Lighty' patches of play around the greens proved a bit costly for him, no doubt he will work on this going forward

Greenside bunker at the 10th

With son Max on the bag...... for some of the time anyway, Richard Allen at #4 was pitted against a very seasoned campaigner in Bruce Alford. Both played very steady golf, the latter an extremely good short game as the final hole would attest to.

All square after 17 holes this match was looming as pivotal to our team outcome. Both players drove well into the wind and at this point, the rain. Keith's second found a LHS greenside bunker. Richard's strong approach found the green but 20' away - two putts and par was his.  To our dismay Keith secured a miraculous 'up and down' for par to halve their match.

Alas, the putt at the 18th goes low

Billy Flinn at #3 played such a solid match today, many of the holes being halved / won / lost with birdies.  After a bit of controversy down the 10th their match got pretty focussed in a do-or-die tussle to see Billy right in it after the 14th.  An up-and-down from his opponent at the 15th to go 2-up was a tough ask over the finishing holes and Billy fell just short but a great day's play for him.

Playing at #2 this round, Barry Tippett came up against a really strong striker of the ball in Dave Foster.  They have played each other many times over the years and have a fairly solid appreciation of each other's game. Today it was a close tussle with only a hole or two in it all day, 'Baz' just running out of holes for a narrow loss.

Mick Terrington at #1 played really well today on the back of some good form last weekend and never let his opponent into the game, finishing off his match for a win after 15 holes, our third.

A simpler chip at the 15th

Hence still good news from this ... the team secured a 3.5 / 3.5 halved contest. This halve on the back of the same outcome last week keeps us well positioned in the standing.

Another great team effort against good opposition

Div 1 Round 4 Advice:

  • Sunday 7th April at 13th Beach - course TBC
  • Vs Queens Park
  • Assemble 7.30am / Hit-off 8.00am

Division 4 at Bannockburn:

BHGC Def The Sands: 5/2

1. Joe Raimondo W 4/3

2. Cam Russell W3/1

3. Brett Purchase Square Paul Klein L 4/3

4. Adam Charleston W4/3

5. Graeme Mathers W 5/4

6. Graeme Swinton L 2 dn

7. Paul KleinW 4/3

Report from Graeme Swinton

Division 4 recorded a very good win over The Sands played at Bannockburn. An early start at 8.00am meant team members arose before 6.00am in the dark then spent up to 40 minutes journeying to Bannockburn for a 7.30am assembly. Thank goodness daylight saving is coming to an end.

Plenty of planning went into the team preparation including course familiarisation, distribution of Bannockburn course notes and the 2019 revised Golf Australia Rules relating to the Do's and Don'ts of playing sand greens.

The outcome was a successful day, Barwon Heads recording a good 5/2 win against The Sands.

With tight tree lined fairways, Paul Klein decided to leave his driver in his bag and with consistent play recorded a win 4/3. Graeme Swinton got off to a poor start and was 4 down after 5 holes. Hanging in was the order of the day and after hitting off the 18th tee 1 down, a missed putt on the 18th sand green resulted in a 2 down loss. Brett Purchase's opponent did not let him into his match, playing consistent golf to close it out on the 15th hole. New member Graeme Mathers controlled his match from the start with very solid golf and was delighted to record his first pennant win for Barwon Heads. It was also pleasing to have Adam Charleston (new pennant member), Cameron Russell and Joe Raimondo (new pennant member) record wins and place the Division 4 side in a good position going into the second half of the seven-week season.

A great effort to bounce back from last week with a sound win on a course very few of us have played prior, and sand scrapes to boot of course!

Roll on round four...

Division 4 - Round 3 advice:

  • Sunday 7th April at Lonsdale

  • Vs Portarlington

  • Assemble 9.00am / Hit-off 9.30am

  • Be mindful of Daylight savings time change

WOMEN'S PENNANT

Round One

Division oNE

By Ann Manuell

Our pennant season got underway at Portarlington against 13th Beach who were seeking redemption for missing out last year. Uunfortunately they achieved that, winning 3/2.

The conditions were reasonably mild early on but then the wind gathered strength. The course was in good condition - providing your ball stayed on the fairway.  The team, including the caddies, looked terrific in the new pennant colours, despite one or two not being sure the combination suited them.

First off was Zara Brookes who came up against a formidable opponent going down 9/7.  Anna Rothe's New Zealand practice held her in good stead and had a great 5/4 win, as did the ever-dependable Dawn Macdonald with a 2/1 win. Unfortunately there it stopped with Annie Seccull having an up and down round finally missing out on the 18th and my opponent outplayed me winning 6/5.

We're off to 13th Beach next week to play Angelsea. Onwards and upwards!!

Report by Jackie McDonald

The team of (L-R) Jennie, Flossie, Bec, Fiona and Lindy, made up the Division 2 pennant team this week.

Jennie Reed won 2/3

Flossie Kent won 2-up

Bec Bain lost 2-down

Fiona Smith won on the 19th

Lindy Kay lost 1 down

Barwon Heads won!

The golf gods could have blown us either way with most of us still in our matches on the 18th. The gods blew the winds in our favour, finally winning three of our matches (Oni's on the 19th). Great start with next week off as hosts. Thank you Jackie and Bec.

Division 3

Division 3 hosted at Barwon Heads.

Division 4

By Bronnie Robson

Division 4 defeated Lonsdale 3-2.

Unfortunately, Lonsdale had two defaults as two players played out of order.

Thanks to Tinks Urquhart and Jane Galbraith for being our emergency players, both having very close matches.

Sunday Pennant

The season for the Club's Sunday women's pennant team kicked off last Sunday at Lonsdale Golf Club against Torquay.

In a tightly contested challenge Barwon Heads went down 3/2 to Torquay but sent a clear message to the competition that we are going to be one of the teams to watch in the coming weeks.

While three of our team members (myself included) were unfortunately unavailable for the opening round, our group of capable emergencies were at the ready to adeptly fill these gaps.

The team line up for this match was (refer photo above l to r) Carole Hinchcliffe (ably assisted by caddy, Barb Inglis), Claire Hewitt, Bronwyn Constance, Deb Fowler (Acting Captain) and Margie Blair.

Our two winning matches were convincing and quick, with Margie and Bronwyn's results of 6/5 and 8/6 respectively making for an early lunch break.

Claire Hewitt was also competitive to the bitter end, finishing on the 18th 1-down. Both Deb and Carole were likewise up for the challenge, taking their respective matches to the end of the 16th hole before succumbing to their opponents (4/2 and 3/2).

The cold and wet weather certainly added to the challenges of the day and a clear signal that pennant has now started!

Round 2 next Sunday (7th) sees us playing at Torquay against Queens Park.

Happy golfing everyone.
